January 21 Weekly Finds

1. Skew The Script

Cult of Pedagogy just put out its list of Ed Tech tools to try in 2022 and a math website, https://skewthescript.org, was among the list!   It has lessons for Algebra I, II and Prob and Stats and AP Stats.

Skew The Script offers free curriculum that makes math what it already is: relevant. There are lessons on lighter topics like sports, fast food, and pop culture, along with others on more serious issues like climate change, equity issues, gun control, and vaccinations. Lessons include videos, teacher slide decks, student handouts, and other resources to support teachers in face-to-face or online teaching.

They also have a YouTube channel with videos: https://www.youtube.com/c/SkewTheScript

2. Text Masking Using Canva

Did you know you can make your own custom desktop computer and phone wallpapers in Canva? Click those links for templates! But not only that, you can also mask text and do all kinds of cool things, just like Gabriel Carrillo shows in this video:

3. Your LMS isn’t just for Virtual Learning

In this blog post by the Virginia Society of Technology in Education (VSTE), learn 40 ways that you can use your LMS in your instruction every day!

4. Check the Spreadsheet!

With students and teachers in and out of class isolating or quarantining, how do you keep students and yourself up to date on assignments? If you’re struggling, you may want to check out Joe Milliano’s spreadsheet. As students ask “What’s the homework?”, he can respond “Check the spreadsheet”. What do I do if I’m absent? Check the spreadsheet. What did we do in class? Check the spreadsheet!

I can easily see this being incorporated into your LMS too. On our modules, we have a place for a weekly overview. If using Google Sheets, I can see embedding this spreadsheet into that area so it’s front and center for students to view. Or it could be in a separate module that is pinned or always kept at the top. Or put it in your announcements for the week!

5. Get More Gray Space in Google Slides

This great find from Erika Asquino allows you to hide the slide thumbnails on the left side of the screen and gives you LOTs more room to add more objects for drag and drop or matching activities. Click on View>Show Filmstrip
